Other
than the first quarter Kansas had all but shut down the vaunted
Triple Option attack from the Jackets. That first quarter was huge
for Tech but we didn't know how huge it would be until the end.
Georgia Tech raced out to a 14-0 lead lead by that Triple Option
attack. Orwin Smith ran in from 9 yards out on the opening drive,
and on the second drive Tech looked like they would be in cruise
control as Roddy Jones scampered in the endzone from 61 Yards to
give Tech that 14 point lead. It was assumed that Tech would run
away with it after that I mean Kansas isn't as good as a lot of
teams that Tech will be facing coming up and one assumed that Tech
would step on the gas because they couldn't stop the Option. Well
the stopped it and stopped it cold for the rest of the game. The
score was 14-0 at the half and in the 3rd Quarter the struggles
by the Jackets continued, they did drive the ball down but missed
the field goal and Kansas started it's mini comeback as they posted
10 unanswered point to claw back within 4 going into the 4th Quarter.
The defense for Georgia Tech does need to be commended for keep
Kansas away as long as they did. After a Tevin Washington Interception
Kansas brought the ball deep into Tech territory but again the defense
stiffined up and forced a field goal which kept the lead for Georgia
Tech at 14-13. They needed just one stop and almost had it but a
lob/hail mary pass from Kansas was answered as a Wide Receiver lept
in the air and came down with the ball around the 30 yard line.
Still Tech had it's chances but could stop Kansas on this drive
as they went in the endzone for the what looked like a game winning
Touchdown. A big key though was Tech stopping Kansas on their 2
point conversion, that kept the game winnable for Georgia Tech.
Tech started their last effort drive on the 22 yard line with 35
seconds left in the game. It wouldn't need that much as the first
play of the game they throw a slant pass to their best target Stephen
Hill who ran the route beautifully and caught it behind the defenders
and Kansas could catch him from behind as Stephen Hill ran 78 yards
for the game winning Touchdown. Tech did add on the 2-point conversion
to make it a 22-19 game. Kansas did have it's shot and got into
Tech territory but a last second heave towards the endzone was batted
down and Georgia Tech survived and moved to 3-0 with ACC play starting
next week.
Paul
Johnson knew that he got away with one here, as he said after the
game that if they play like that they won't win many more this season.
Next week in comes North Carolina for their first ACC game of the
season. Carolina definitely a step up from anyone Tech has played
so far. It's going to be tough sledding against the Tar Heels I
am thinking, but not un-winnable. However if they do play like they
did today we will be really wondering where this season is going
to go for the 2011 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets.
